35th ANNUAL ATLANTIC ANTIC STREET FESTIVAL
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4th
Vote for the first annual Festival Favorite! !
Brooklyn, New York, September 15, 2009 – The Atlantic Avenue Local Development Corporation (AALDC) presents the 35th Annual Atlantic Antic Street Festival on Sunday, October 4th, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m, rain or shine!
For the first time, the Atlantic Antic will present its Festival Favorite Award, honoring the most popular edible treat showcased at the Antic. Christian Haag, Vice President of the AALDC, is enthusiastic about the first annual Festival Favorite, “The AALDC thinks it is only appropriate to honor the food vendors that make the Atlantic Antic famous!” Attendees can vote from a wide variety of international delicacies found on the avenue including Middle Eastern baklava and hummus, Spanish paella, Caribbean oxtail, and Parisian crepes.
The Atlantic Antic, a true Brooklyn institution, spans 10 blocks – from Hicks Street to Fourth Avenue – passing through three beautiful Brooklyn brownstone neighborhoods, making the festival one of the largest in the city. Unique to this community festival is the number of participating local merchants, artisans, musical acts, and not for profits bringing together a fabulous array of authentic Brooklyn food, festivities, and fun on one mile of Atlantic Avenue.
Additional culinary offerings include famed local specialties such as the pulled pork and steak sandwich on a pretzel roll served by Building on Bond Cafe, new to the festival last year and sold out by mid day, or the decadent grilled sardines from La Mancha Restaurant, that draw a crowd so large that it stretched down the block and around the corner.
Year after year, visitors flock to the legendary grilled sardines served up by La Mancha Restaurant, only found on Atlantic Avenue! Last year, lines of eager festival-goers waited in a line down the avenue to snap up the savory fish. Jose Arias, owner of La Mancha Restaurant explains, “Grilled sardines are a traditional street food in the part of Spain where I am from. It is my pleasure to bring this European tradition to the heart of Brooklyn!”
All attendees have the opportunity to vote on a festival favorite and one lucky winner will receive a two-night stay at Nu Hotel, dinner for four at Deity Lounge & Supper Club, and a two-day car rental from All Car Rent A Car. Voters can pick up ballots at various food vendors along the avenue or at Brooklyn Community Foundation booths located between Clinton and Court Street, Hoyt and Bond Street, and 3rd and 4th Avenue.
The Festival Favorite Award will be presented to the food vendor with the most votes. As always, attendees are sure to have a satisfying yet guilt-free experience as the Antic extends approximately 1 mile, allowing festival attendees to shamelessly indulge in their favorite foods while walking their treats off on Atlantic Avenue.
The Antic, in its 35th year, will once again feature nine live performance stages- including blues, rock, country, R&B, jazz, a Middle Eastern orchestra with belly dancers, and interactive music for kids - to keep you moving and grooving all along the avenue. With inflatable rides, face painting, and pony rides, the Antic is loaded with of fun activities for the whole family!
This year, the Antic welcomes as its largest sponsor the new Brooklyn Community Foundation, Brooklyn’s vehicle for charitable giving and community service. Marilyn Gelber, President of the Brooklyn Community Foundation, said, “The Brooklyn Community Foundation is proud to sponsor such a quintessentially Brooklyn event and to encourage Brooklynites to give back to their community so we can make our borough an even better place to live.”
To help guide Antic goers through their food journey of sweet and savory, a map of Antic food vendors, stages, and special activities will be distributed the week prior in the Brooklyn Paper and the Brooklyn Heights Courier on October 2nd and during the Atlantic Antic.
The 2009 Atlantic Antic is presented by the AALDC, originally formed in 1974, as a not-for-profit organization committed to the economic development of the Atlantic Avenue area from Fourth Avenue to the East River waterfront in Brooklyn, New York. In addition to producing special events, the organization's activities include implementation of streetscape improvements, historic storefront preservation, and advocacy on issues of importance to the retail and residential community.
Sponsors of the 2009 Antic include: Brooklyn Community Foundation, Con Edison, Equinox Fitness, Six Points Craft Ales, Nu Hotel, Allcar Rent A Car, and Deity Lounge and Supper Club, with media sponsors Time Out NY, New York Times, CW 11, Brooklyn Paper, and Brooklyn Heights Courier.
