Background:
According to the 2006 Boerum Hill Calendar: "The
Atlantic Antic, the brainchild of Howard Lewis and Harry
Reid who lived on Pacific Street, was first held in
1974." Howard Lewis and Harry Reid now reside in
Nantucket.
"'Harry and I started the largest festival that's
going in NYC, the Atlantic Antic.' Howard paused to
pull out a huge rolled-up picture of a full page of
the New York Times announcing in large boldface letters,
'NEIGHBORHOODS THAT GO DOWN WILL GO UP'; under the big
picture of Howard and Harry, thumbs up, was printed
'THEY PROVED IT.' The page, provided by Brooklyn Union
Gas, lauded the two men 'for their remarkable efforts
to bring new life to Boerum Hill's Atlantic Avenue...They
raised their voices to stop further demolition of their
neighborhood's brownstone resources...ultimately winning
a historic district designation from New York City.'
BYG [Brooklyn Union Gas] presented Howard and Harry
with the Cinderella award, a large crystal obelisk given
to outstanding citizens of Brooklyn." (from College
Boy Meets Dream Isle - Howard Lewis, by Mary Miles)
